Kuranda Sights: The Butterfly Sanctuary

There are many things to see and do in Kuranda for those interested in experiencing the rainforest and meeting its inhabitants. As a part of Tropical Wing's Kuranda package we had the chance to visit the Butterfly Sanctuary where they take care of over 1500 tropical butterflies. The aviary was opened in 1987, and is the largest in Australia.

The aviary is home to various types of butterflies such as Ulysses Butterfly and Cairns Birdwing. It was also possible to go into their lab, where you could see the caterpillars and cocoons that later transform themselves into butterflies or moths. Approximately 30,000 caterpillars are bred here every year.
