Autumn has arrived here in Japan, and with it comes the beloved red leaf season, kouyou (紅葉). One of the popular places to visit not too far from Tokyo is the Oze National Park (尾瀬), which is situated right on the border between three prefectures: Gunma, Niigata, and Fukushima.

Gifu: 5 Things you should try in Gujo Hachiman (郡上八幡)
Gujo is a small town in Gifu prefecture, an area most known for the historical city of Takayama and the Unesco-listed village Shirakawa-go. I recently visited Gujo Hachiman for the Gujo Odori festival, but there are many other things this little town has to offer for interested visitors. If you're looking for activities you can do while in Gujo Hachiman you can check out five of my recommendations in this post!

How to become a Fukumusume (Shrine Maiden) - Imamiya Ebisu, Osaka
Back when I was a student in Kyoto I had the chance to participate in the popular festival "Toka Ebisu" (十日戎) in Osaka as a "lucky girl" - fukumusume (福娘). This was a great cultural experience for me, and one of the most fun memories I have of my time as a student in Japan. Each year the Imamiya Ebisu shrine elects a total of 50 girls through the Fukumusume contest, and the lucky chosen get to work at the shrine during the 3-day long Osaka festival held on an annual basis in January, and if you are lucky you could have the chance to become one of the lucky girls of next year!

When and where to see Autumn Foliage in Japan 2018
Although most tourists are familiar with the Japanese cherry blossom period the autumn is almost just as popular among domestic travelers. The red-leaf season is known as kouyou (紅葉) in Japanese, which literarily means "red leaves". The Japanese red maple looks stunningly beautiful with its dark red colors and is a spectacle within short traveling distance whether you visit one of the bustling Japanese cities or the laidback countryside. Below you can find a chart by the Japan Rail Pass Official Vendor that shows when and where to visit:

Gifu: 7 Tips About the Gujo Odori Festival You Need To Know
Bon-Odori (A dance taking place during the Japanese Obon period) is a typical sight during summer in Japan, concentrating on mid-August. You can find these dances being held throughout the country, both in the bigger cities (here from Bon-Odori in Ebisu) and out on the countryside. Amongst them is the Gujo Odori taking place at Gujo Hachiman (郡上八幡) in Gifu Prefecture, known as one of Japan's three most important Obon Odoris. Every night tens of thousands of people come together to dance to the songs of ancient times, with the sound of their geta shoes clashing against the pavement and tunes of shamisen filling the air. As you get closer to dawn the sounds around you intensify, and it is as if you can feel the spirits of an age long gone. This is a Japanese Obon festival you wouldn't want to miss out on.

Papua New Guinea: Five Easy Rules to Stay Safe in Port Moresby
Photo: Anette
While Papua New Guinea is known as a fantastic destination for diving, bird watching and exotic festivals the capital Port Moresby, also known as Pom City, is infamous for being one of the most dangerous cities in the world. The situation might not be as bad as portrayed by some international media, but if you’re visiting the capital it is still best to take some precautions to ensure that you’ll be able to go back home with only pleasant memories from your trip.

Papua New Guinea: Kayaking at Walindi Plantation Resort
Photo: Anette
The Walindi Plantation Resort offers a wide range of activities for staying guests, including bird watching, a trip to local towns and villages in the area, a hot spring river, volcano trekking, snorkeling and most famously diving. After our diving day trip onboard one of the resort’s diving boats we took a day relaxing at the resort and spent the morning trying out one of the free activities you can do while there, namely kayaking.

Papua New Guinea on a Budget: A guide to Kokopo Market
Photo: Anette
One of the things that make it difficult to travel in Papua New Guinea is that there are few options available for budget travelers. Domestic flights, hotels, and food are all within the same price range as a lot of western countries despite the standard of service is below what you can expect in nearby destinations. If you're looking for a local experience where you also can save some bucks it would be a good idea to spend some time visiting a local market. During my visit to Kokopo for the National Mask Festival, I took the opportunity to stop by the Kokopo Market for some fruit.

Papua New Guinea: Diving Report from the Walindi Plantation Resort
Photo: Anette
Papua New Guinea is known for its world-renowned diving spots, and diving was also one of the main activities on the bucket list for things we wanted to do while visiting the country. After arriving in Port Moresby we took the first local airplane to Hoskins Airport in Kimbe where we were met by the Walindi Plantation Resort shuttle bus taking us the 1-hour drive to the resort. We were eager to dive into the pristine Papa New Guinean waters, so for our first day at the resort we signed up for a full day of scuba diving.

Papua New Guinea: An Introduction to the Tolai Tubuan's Kinavai Ceremony - National Mask Festival
Photo: Anette
To celebrate the diversity of its people, the province of East New Britain hosts an annual National Mask Festival in July where people from the tribes of Tolai, Baining, Pomio, and Sulka gather up to display their unique attires and dances (see also: 10 Tips for Visiting PNG's National Mask Festival - Kokopo & Rabaul). The festival commences with a ceremony called the ‘Kinavai’, where the Tolai Tubuans arrive at dawn in boats from the sea.

The National Mask & Warwagira Festival is an annual event taking place in East New Britain where the local tribes gather to display their traditional attires and dances. A Guide To PNG's Sacred Baining Fire Dance - Rabaul
Photo: Anette
Papua New Guinea is a country that consists of thousands of smaller tribes, all with their own unique culture and often even language. If you visit the country a stop by one of their local festivals where you can see some of these tribes by yourself can provide a unique cultural experience and an excellent memory from your trip. During our visit to PNG my hubby and I traveled by local plane from Port Moresby to Kokopo to experience the National Mask Festival, and one of the biggest highlights of the festival for me was the trip into the jungle to see the sacred Baining Firedance.

PNG: All You Need To Know About the Tavurvur Volcano Hike
Photo: Anette
Tavurvur is often referred to as one of Papua New Guinea (PNG)'s most dangerous volcanos. The nearby city Rabaul, once known as the 'jewel of the Pacific', used to be the provincial capital of the East Britain island until an eruption from the volcano destroyed big parts of the city in 1994. Although its last eruption occurred as recent as in 2014, the volcano has become a popular place to visit for tourists to the area, and when we visited the island for the National Mask Festival it was a natural destination for a day trip from our base in Kokopo.

5 Tips for Flying Domestically in Papua New Guinea
During my recent visit to Papua New Guinea we had to take domestic flights a couple of times; from Port Moresby to visit the Walindi Plantation Resort in Kimbe and the mask festival in Rabaul. Although our trips mostly went without further problems I made a couple of observations along the way, and as some of them might be of interest I’m sharing some of them here.

Papua New Guinea: Homestay at Fisherman’s Island
Most visitors to Papua New Guinea enter the country through Port Moresby, a sleepy capital that often is described as one of the most dangerous capitals in the world. Although this might frighten some people from paying PNG a visit there are perfectly safe places in the vicinity of the capital where you can experience the hospitality of the Islanders. Just half an hour by boat from Port Moresby lies Fisherman’s Island, a peaceful community with a population of around 1,000 people. During our recent Papua New Guinea adventure we visited the island for a 2-day homestay with Joel and his family.

Tokyo Trains: 5 Tips to Survive Your Daily Commute
Eight years ago, when I had decided to study in Japan, I sat down and made a list of the universities I wanted to study at. Although I had many different criteria on my list, the most important to me was that the university wasn't located in Tokyo. Why, you ask? Well, that's simple: too big, too noisy, and...Packed trains
. Little did I know that a few years later I would make this city my home, and in turn have to face my fears of the packed Tokyo trains on a daily basis. Throughout the years I've learned a thing or two about commuting in Tokyo, and I hope that the tips below can be of help to you too!Monday, June 25, 2018
Having Coffee with a Monk: The Temple-Themed Tera Cafe in Daikanyama
Right on Tokyo's posh Komazawa Street between Daikanyama and Ebisu district you can find Tera Cafe, a cafe/restaurant that is themed after a Buddhist temple, or tera (寺) in Japanese. At first glance, this might seem like a regular cafe, but you'll soon notice that there's more to it than meets the eye. This chic temple-themed cafe seems to be the place to go for instance if you want to combine a healthy meal with a consultation session with a Buddhist monk.

Tokyo Festivals: Hydrangea in bloom at the Hakusan Shrine (白山あじさい祭り)
Summer is peak season for festivals here in Japan, and those of you who stop by Tokyo in June might just be in time for festivals related to the hydrangea flower, known in Japanese as Ajisai (紫陽花). You can find various flower festivals held throughout the year in various places in the country, with the most popular ones being related to the cherry blossom, sakura. But other flowers like the hydrangea are also becoming increasingly popular, and just last week I went to check out the festival held at the Hakusan Shrine in Tokyo's Bunkyo-ku area.

Osaka & Kyoto Hotel Special: Grand Opening Hotels 2018
While the Japanese government just has introduced a new law to reduce the number of apartments rented out through sites like AirBnB, so-called "minpaku", the number of hotels that are welcoming foreigners continues to increase with the steadily growing number of tourists visiting Japan. Just like last year I've made a list of newly opening hotels in Osaka and Kyoto (you can also check out the list for grand new 2018 Tokyo hotels here) for those interested in trying out some of the shiny new hotels while in town.
- Osaka & Kyoto Hotel Areas
- 1. Minami - Shinsaibashi (心斎橋) / Namba (難波)
- 2. Central Osaka - Honmachi (本町) / Yodoyabashi (淀屋橋) / Kitahama (北浜)
- 3.Kita - Umeda (梅田)
- 4.Osaka Bay (大阪湾)
- 5.Kyoto (京都)
Area: Minami
Welcome to Osaka's world of neon lights! The southern ("minami ") part of Osaka offers endless options for nightlife, entertainment, and shopping. Shinsaibashi, Namba, and Dotonbori are all popular choices for visitors to this side of town. Although it can be rather congested, the area offers anything from low to mid-range items, so if you are looking for unique gifts to bring back home this place will definitely not disappoint you. Just watch out for large groups of Chinese tourists shopping like there's no tomorrow.
