[Hotel Review] Futakotamagawa Excel Hotel Tokyu - A Suburban Choice

Just an 11-minute train ride from Shibuya you find Futakotamagawa (二子玉川), a modern and trendy area that often is referred to as Nikotama by the locals. Nikotama has been gaining an increasing amount of recognition during the last ten years, and now you can even find offices of large companies situated in the area. Within 5 minutes' walk from the station, you can find Futakotamagawa Excel Hotel Tokyu, an elegant hotel that opened its doors to visitors in July 2015. A couple of weeks ago I had the opportunity to visit the hotel on a business trip, and below I've gathered some photos from the visit.

The hotel name Futakotamagawa actually refers to the Tama river by which it is situated, and the beautiful sight of the river is the first thing that meets you when you get out of the station. The hotel is easy to spot already from the station, as it is one of the only tall buildings in the area. Right by the hotel, you can find a big shopping mall and the area also has a range of new and fancy restaurants for you to enjoy. This is also the same building as the technology giant Rakuten has its headquarters, so it is convenient for travelers on business trips.

Situated on the upper floors of the building Futakotamagawa Excel Hotel Tokyu offers a stunning view of the river, and as there are no tall buildings in the vicinity you also get a view of Tokyo that is hard to get when staying in the center of the metropolis.
The hotel offers mainly Twin and Double room types, and the hotel manager kindly took his time to showing me around to these rooms. The view you get depends on the room type, and the hotel has both City/River and Garden view rooms. While the outward facing rooms offer a fabulous view of either the river or the city the Garden View rooms come with a small balcony and a garden facing the center of the hotel.

Be aware that rooms in Japan are known to be small in size. If you have a lot of luggage with you or prefer more spacious rooms you might want to make sure to make a reservation with one of the Twin Rooms. For Double and Twin the sizes available are:

Double:
  • Season 16.0㎡
  • City View 19.0㎡

Twin:
  • Season 23.0㎡
  • River View 23.0㎡
  • Terrace 25.0㎡
  • Universal A 23.0㎡
  • Universal B 23.0㎡

The hotel rooms come with all necessary items you will need for your stay. Including standard items such as hair dryer, shampoo, and conditioner there is also a range of free items that guests can take with them such as a free toothbrush set, razor, shower cap and a hairbrush. Unfortunately, most of the free room amenities at hotels end up in the garbage after only one time's use, and as a conscious consumer, I strictly try not to utilize free items I know aren't absolutely necessary. Regardless it is nice that such things are provided in the case of an emergency.

Since I didn't actually stay at the hotel I didn't have the chance to check out their breakfast, but at least the view from the restaurant on the 30th floor provides an excellent relaxing environment to enjoy your first meal of the day. The hotel offers buffet breakfast at JPY2,708 for adults / JPY1,354 for children aged 7 to 12 years old/complimentary for children up to 6 years.
