Asap SCIENCE Study Tips to Study Smarter instead of longer

10:12:00 AM

Just came across this video from AsapScience about how to study smarter instead of longer.
As a full-time employee it is hard for me to find time to study outside of work. This video gave me some interesting tips that might make it easier for me to keep up with my studies while also doing my best at the regular job. I hope it can be of help for you too :)

Here is the transcript of the video:

Time for school! And it's no surprise that many of us are determined to study smarter instead of longer. But which study tips and tricks actually work scientifically and can help you get those perfect grades? First up, research shows that study sessions are most effective in small short chunks. Instead of cramming in a 10 our study session. It's much more effective to spread it out into twenty thirty minute sessions over a few weeks. This is because your brain is better at encoding information into the synapses in short repeated sessions as opposed to one large one.
And this is why even learning different skills whether it's swimming tennis or a singing lesson often follows the same format. And well cramming and pulling all nighters maybe a ritual, it turns out that this is linked to the lowest grades. After prolonged nocturnal study sessions, reasoning and memory may be negatively affected for up to four whole days. Instead, setting up specific times in a day or during the week just to study, primes your brain by creating a routine and over time studying actually becomes easier as your brain is trained to learn in those moments.
And while many of us spend hours passively rereading our notes or highlighting a text book, studies have shown this to be an effective. It doesn't improve your understanding of topics nor does it link key concepts together. It can even be detrimental as it draws your attention to less important information. Flashcards on the other hand are proven to be excellent memory reinforcement’s tools. Whether it’s during scheduled study time or drying off times like a bus ride home.
It also helps to have a specific goal for each study session. Instead of aimlessly studying, pick one aspect of focus on. Whether it's balancing chemical equations or learning how to conjugate French verbs. If you can't explain it simply then you don't understand it well enough. In studies where individuals were asked to learn a passage and then half were told that they would be tested on the material while the other half were told they would have to teach it to other students, participants expecting to teach it did much better at understanding the main points. When you're expecting to teach, your brain organizes the information in a more logical-coherence structure.
Of course practice practice practice. Not only do you practice test your brain in the environment but even if you make mistakes they help identify gaps in your knowledge. Practice tests have also been shown to increase confidence thereby leading to better performance. So where should you be studying research shows that having a designated secret spot for study that's well equipped with every tool you might need is best. Just like setting times this primes your brain for studying. Have an awesome study playlist? Not so fast. While some studies have shown that certain types of classical music can help improve concentration, a recent study has shown that learning with rhythmic background noise can be detrimental to focus and those not using music fared much better.
And if you haven't already, put away your phone! This is a no-brainer but your text and social media notifications severely decrease concentration. Of course exams can be extremely stressful so if you want some tips on how to deal with exam anxiety, check out our ASAP thought video which breaks down some tips for that . Link in the description.

Delayed, rebooked or cancelled flight? How to easily get compensation from the airline

10:28:00 PM
If you're a frequent traveler you probably know how it is like to suddenly be stuck in the middle of nowhere after some unforeseen issues with your flight. That happened to me as recent as in May; after a short visit to Norway me and my husband were taking a plane back from Bergen to Tokyo with a short stopover in Copenhagen, but due to technical issues with the plane we landed in Copenhagen just as the next plane took off to Tokyo.

While our originally scheduled flight from Copenhagen would land in Tokyo around noon we had to take a different route with a stopover in Shang Hai, which lead to our arrival being delayed by 7 hours (!).

The airline rebooked us on a new plane for free as we were using the same airline all the way (I would recommend anyone taking a flight with a stopover to use the same airline for all flights for this exact reason), but all we got in compensation for the delay was a 50 DKK (approximately 8 USD) coupon to use at the airport. On top of that we were told that the luggage would be sent directly to Tokyo, which it turned out it wasn't, thus ending with our bags being stuck in Shang Hai for another 24 hours.

Originally we thought it would be too much of a hassle to try and get something back from the airline, but luckily my father knew about a company that could take care of all the hard work for us called AirHelp.

AirHelp does all the work with getting your compensation from the airline if they deem you have a strong case. In fact, if you had a flight that was delayed, cancelled or overbooked within the last 3 years you might be eligible for a refund from the airline. And unless the airline agrees to give you a compensation you won't have to pay AirHelp anything for their services. All you have to do on your hand is to fill in your flight details through their webpage, which is really simple and should take you no more than around 5 minutes in total.

After a couple of weeks we received an email from AirHelp saying that the airline accepted our claim, which lead to a compensation for both me and my husband. AirHelp got their commission of 25% of the total sum - which was not a small fee but considering that they did all the hard work it was still a small price to pay. I know that if AirHelp hadn't been around we wouldn't have gotten anything beside the lousy 50 DKK coupon and we're both extremely happy with their assistance. If you experience problems with your flight and don't know how to proceed to get a compensation I would strongly recommend AirHelp's services!

The Rebound Phenomenon, or how rural Japan was saved by tourists

11:02:00 PM
An estimated 19,730,000 foreigners visited Japan in 2015 according to Inbound Navi
The number of tourists visiting Japan has been increasing rapidly during the last couple of years as Japan is experiencing a weaker yen, low-cost carriers providing cheaper flights, combined with a softening on visa regulations especially for its Asian neighbours. This has led to an "opening" of the country in a scale that almost gives associations to the end of the Sakoku in 1853 when Japan started opening up to foreigners for the first time in around 200 years.

Funny Videos: Ylvis' "Intelevator"

5:14:00 AM
Perhaps you have already heard about the Norwegian comedy duo Ylvis? These are the two guys behind last years' international mega-hit "The Fox". Although the song brought them instant world fame the talented brothers were originally more famous in Norway for their many comedy shows rather than their music.
This is one video based on a prank shown in their TV-show "I kveld med Ylvis" that I personally find quite funny. I specially like how the brothers utilize so many different languages (or imitation of languages) in their prank. Anyway, hope you'll enjoy it;)

Some of you might remember the Ylvis brothers from last years' hit "The Fox"

Patrick Stewart on Domestic Violence. What a Man!

10:12:00 PM
Just watched this video where Patrick Steward talks about his childhood living in a home with domestic violence. It really touched me to hear his story; his braveness shows that he is definitely a Man with a capital M. Although violence should never be justified it is important to remember that there always are underlying factors that can contribute to the man/women becoming violent towards his/her partner, factors that sometimes can be prevented if we manage to help these individuals getting their life back on the track.

Anyway, I hope you'll enjoy this video as much as I did (^_^)
Ciao!

Dove Real Beauty - How Other People Perceive You

11:49:00 AM
In todays society we are always faced with a huge pressure of looking good in every situation. Many people live with the fear that they don't live up to the ideal of the society, where the media constantly tell us that we need the right clothes and makeup in order to look good.

When I was a kid my mother always told me: "you don't need make-up, because you are so pretty already". Although this might just be the reflection of a mother's love for her child I still feel that this is something more women should teach their kids - to appreciate their natural beauty. Because of what my mother taught me I rarely wear makeup for my daily life, besides my formal lectures and other special events I attend. For me, this is what make-up should be for; for that special occasion when you want to go the extra mile. As anyone else I also have moments where I feel unconfident with myself and my appearance, but I try to overcome this feeling through compensating in other areas such as increasing my knowledge, through exercising and through gaining experience in other fields.

Anyway, how you perceive yourself is of course crucial to how others perceive you. You are your own worst critic, and often people perceive themselves in a way that does not reflect the beauty that others see in them. That is why I really like this video, and I hope you enjoy it too.

Instaframe: Improving your Instagram Photos

2:03:00 PM
I have just discovered the application Instaframe, which can be used to put together your photos for beautiful collages, and have found it a really practical tool for combining with the Instagram application for even better pictures.
In this post I will present two ways these applications can be combined for an even more stunning photo experience.

Example one: Add color to your photos for a vivid sunset effect.

Original picture taken at Alona beach in Bohol
Step One: Add effect with Instaframe
The original picture was taken by the sunset, but as you can see the colors are not that deep. So I opened the picture in Instaframe and added the sunset effect.
After having been edited in Instaframe the picture has the characteristic Instagram-format and a deeper purple color

Step Two: Add Instagram effect!
Secondly I opened the newly saved Instaframe picture in Instagram, and added a second effect to the picture. Voila!
Finished editing! I love the dramatic color of this one x)

Example Two: Use Instagram to edit pictures before you make your collages with Instaframe.

Here you can see the example of two original pictures, which I added to a collage after having edited them with Instagram.
Original 1: The Chocolate Hills, Bohol
Original Two: A Clownfish spotted during our diving trips in Balicasag

And this is the final result! Hope you like it!! ^^

Prezi: Tool to make Interesting Powerpoint-Presentations

11:12:00 AM
I just discovered a really interesting online program called Prezi that can be used to make creative and professional presentations. I think it is nice to have an alternative to the ordinary powerpoint, and I also though that it would be a nice thing to share with all of my readers out there. Recently I haven't had much time or energy to update my blog, so here you have the chance to see one of many projects I have been working on for school lately. Quite a small project though, but I think it shows the possibilities this program has to create more interesting presentations;) So to all of you hard-working students out there, this one is for you. 화이팅! (頑張って〜)

5 Easy Steps to Become Fluent in a New Language

2:26:00 PM
In the modern society it seems that a lot of us are stressing around, either it is school or work that is demanding our time there is simply always something that needs to be done. Even when one has decided to learn a new language it is not always easy to find the time or the right method to actually go through with it, and therefore I have collected some of my favorite ways of learning languages in this post, in hope that it might benefit some of my readers as well.

1. Use your useless time
My father always told me that the ones that gets really good at something, are the ones who practices when others don't. Do you want to learn a new language, but feel that you don't have time? Well, then let me ask you this: Don't you commute to school/work almost every day? Do you clean your house? Do you cook your own dinner? If your answer is yes to any of these questions it means that you certainly have time to learn a foreign language too. All you need, is a listening device, such as an iPod. There are many good programs out there, both pricey ones such as Pimsleur, but also totally free ones too. If you have access to iTunes you should check out their language learning podcasts, which comes in many different languages.
Exchange the music on your iPod for a language podcast, and you can start learning a new language right away!

2. Have fun with it!
There are many ways you can add a bit of language learning to time that would otherwise have been waisted. You can easily use a fun activity, such as watching a movie, to learn a language. Avoid dubbed movies, and go for the real thing! If you need subtitles at first, that's of course fine. It will still make you used to hear the new language, and eventually you will start recognizing words as well. When I was younger I liked to watch English movies with English subtitles. That way I could hear the English words at the same time as I could see how they were written. Nowadays I use http://www.cuevana.tv to watch English dramas with Spanish subtitles, and it gives me a satisfaction knowing that I can pick up new words at the same time I'm enjoying for example a new episode of How I Met Your Mother..

3. Get a tutor!
Learning a new language can be even more fun if you have a friend or a tutor who can help you a bit along the way. Especially if you are in a country where you don't have the chance to practice your desired language on a daily basis, it might be a good thing to get to know somebody who is fluent in the language you want to learn, so that you can ask him/her questions or even have somebody to talk to in the other language. If, however, there is no such person in your vicinity, then don't panic - there is still hope. Livemocha is another great Internet page where you can practice new languages at the same time as you have the chance to communicate with other members from all over the world. This gives you an unique opportunity to get to know people who are willing to help you getting better in whichever language you are interested in.!

4. Drill the vocabulary
However, sooner or later you have to face the fact that you need a lot of vocabulary in order to speak another language. For some languages this part might be easy, especially a lot of European languages are related, and if you already are fluent in Spanish you'll probably find learning French, Italian or Portuguese just a few steps away. However, there will still be new words to learn, and if you - like me - are aiming at completely different languages such as Japanese, Korean or Chinese, then you definitely should make sure you have a good flashcard-program to drill the new words.
Here I would recommend Mnemosyne, which might seem like a normal flashcard program, but where you can rate your answers from 1-6, and the program will automatically repeat the words you are bad at more often. For those out there with iPhone etc, check out the iSRS-application.
With these programs it is possible both making your own flashcards, or to download ready-made vocabulary packs from Mnemosyne's Internet page.

5. Don't be afraid to speak up!
..Which might be easier said then done for a lot of people out there. But the truth is, NOBODY becomes fluent in a foreign language without making mistakes along the way. Just admit it, you will make mistakes along the way whether you like it or not. If you don't try, you'll never make it.

Do you have any other advices for learning foreign languages, or do you simply have a comment about the learning methods mentioned above? Either way, please don't hesitate to leave me a comment!
