Osaka & Kyoto Hotel Special: Grand Opening Hotels 2018

11:19:00 PM

While the Japanese government just has introduced a new law to reduce the number of apartments rented out through sites like AirBnB, so-called "minpaku", the number of hotels that are welcoming foreigners continues to increase with the steadily growing number of tourists visiting Japan. Just like last year I've made a list of newly opening hotels in Osaka and Kyoto (you can also check out the list for grand new 2018 Tokyo hotels here) for those interested in trying out some of the shiny new hotels while in town.

Area: Minami

Welcome to Osaka's world of neon lights! The southern ("minami ") part of Osaka offers endless options for nightlife, entertainment, and shopping. Shinsaibashi, Namba, and Dotonbori are all popular choices for visitors to this side of town. Although it can be rather congested, the area offers anything from low to mid-range items, so if you are looking for unique gifts to bring back home this place will definitely not disappoint you. Just watch out for large groups of Chinese tourists shopping like there's no tomorrow.

Area: Osaka Bay

Most known as an entertainment area, Osaka Bay is the base of Universal Studios Japan, an American-style theme park that is home to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. If that isn't enough for you, you can also find the Tempozan Harbor Village, which includes a giant Ferris wheel, the Osaka Aquarium, a LEGOLAND Discovery Center (not to be mistaken with the Legoland in Nagoya) and a shopping and dining complex.

Last but not least, Osaka's neighbor city Kyoto. The ancient Japanese capital has endless adventures to offer (I lived here myself for two years, but still feel I couldn't experience more than a fraction of the city), and if you want to get the most out of the city it might be a good idea to base your stay here. Truly a gem of a city, this metropolis will make you feel like you're visiting a small village with its small and charming houses.

Featured on TourRadar: The Most Affordable Places to Stay in Kyoto For Solo Travelers

7:46:00 PM
This week I had the honor of getting by blog featured on Days to Come, an online travel magazine by the tour booking site TourRadar. In the post you can read about a number of great accommodation alternatives in Kyoto that you can stay at for a reasonable price. I've added my quote from the article here:

According to a friend working in the travel industry in Kyoto Piece Hostel Sanjo is the most popular hostel in Kyoto among foreign travelers. It is a traditional Japanese ryokan that has been renovated into a hostel and should be an interesting place for people who want to experience Japanese culture at a budget. They’re apparently also opening up a new hotel in December this year, and are currently doing some opening promotions on their site. Most travelers visit to Kyoto either for the autumn leaf (kouyou) season or the cherry blossom (sakura) season, so you can save money on visiting Kyoto right before and right after these periods when the hotels have lower occupancy rates. – Anette, Adventures of Anette

Osaka & Kyoto Hotel Special: Grand Opening Hotels 2016 - 2017

8:05:00 PM
The number of tourists visiting the famous Japanese cities Osaka and Kyoto is increasing rapidly these days, and with the huge increase in number of visitors comes a number of new hotels ready to cater to these tourists needs with their Japanese omotenashi service. In this post I introduce a list of 12 brand new hotels scheduled to open in Osaka and Kyoto in 2016 and 2017, and I hope you will find them interesting!

Tokyo Hotels: I have also written about newly opening/opened hotels in the capital city Tokyo. You can find an overview of hotels that opened in the second half of 2016 and the first half of 2017 here, and hotels that opened in the second half of 2015 and the first half of 2016 here. I have also written a post about fancy low budget accommodations in Tokyo here.

The hotels below are listed by star rating.

紅葉 Red-Leaf Season in Kyoto 2014!

11:19:00 AM
Kyoto is a popular destination for tourists from domestic and abroad all year around, but the number of visitors to Japan's former capital is especially high during the country's two "viewing" seasons: the Hanami (花見)-season (around April) and the Koyo (紅葉/red leaf)-season.

This year Yuma and I went to Kyoto to meet up with old friends and go visit some 懐かしい places from our student days. Since our visit was limited to one day only we didn't get to see too much unfortunately, but here are some of my pictures from the trip:
The road to Heian Jingu
The Maruyama Koen park in Gion

Two girls in kimono buying ice cream
The only negative thing about visiting Kyoto during the Koyo-season is that you might find yourself literarily stuck in the crowd of Japanese tourists. Especially if you go during the weekend, like we did (working in Japan doesn't leave you that many options when it comes to available days). We tried to visit Kiyomizudera, but in the end we just gave up because there was simply too many people. So my number of koyo-photos was quite limited.

A store where you can make your own ceramics close to Kiyomizudera
Lately I haven't had a lot of time to writing my blog, and this post also is quite lacking in information. Sorry about that.. There are however web pages dedicated to helping you find the best koyo-spots in Kyoto, so if you're planning on visiting the city you can get some inspiration there! In addition I have some koyo-posts from previous years that might be worth checking out (or so I hope at least).
