The New Chitose Airport: Ramen Paradise at the Hokkaido Ramen Dojo (北海道ラーメン道場)

Hokkaido is among other things known for its delicious ramen, and at the New Chitose Airport (新千歳空港) you can find a special area dedicated to ramen from all over Hokkaido. This area can be found on the third floor of the airport (before you enter the safety control), and is called the Hokkaido Ramen Dojo (北海道). Dojo is the Japanese word for a martial arts training room, so you can imagine this is some pretty serious stuff.

Inside the Ramen Dojo you can find a collection of 10 different ramen restaurants, and they all represent the most famous ramen restaurants that can be found around Hokkaido.

Here you can try some rather rare types of ramen such as ramen with shrimp, crab or scallop, but of course they also have regular types of ramen too. Or ramen that according to their posters "would make you feel like a dragon" (...?)

We ended up at a restaurant called Shirakaba-Sansou (白樺山荘) at the far at the end of the Ramen Dojo. I’m not an expert on ramen or anything to be honest, so I was just happy to get a large bowl of ramen.

In addition to the ramen this restaurant also offered all-you-can-eat service with boiled eggs, so for those who feel that a large portion of ramen is not sufficient it is always possible to stuff up on eggs.

With 10 of the best ramen restaurants in Hokkaido gathered under one roof the Hokkaido Ramen Dojo would be a very much recommended place to stop by if you're hungry and have some time to spare at the airport.!

The Chitose Airport also has a lot of other interesting things to offer foreign visitors. You can find a large area dedicated to specialities (名物) from Hokkaido, and if you like Pokemon you’re sure to enjoy their cute Pokemon store. When we visited they also were having a free handout of Royce chocolate.
